Maldives contemporary 2009 opens at National Art Gallery

The national Art Gallery exhibition season will open with Maldives contemporary 2009.
On 29th January. The Exhibition comprises 63 artwork by 24 Maldivian artisit both establish and emerging. The Exhibition will be open for six weeks until 12th March 2009.
The first Maldives contemporary was held in 2005 as the first exhibition of the National Art Gallery(NAG), Maldives. The Exhibition Also mark the formal opening of the NAG and comprised work by 29 participating artists. The works featured in the exhibition were mainly painting but also included screen prints and line drawings.
The idea of instituting the Maldivians contemporary exhibition as a continue series- with a gap of few years in between- came about in relation to the NAG’s object of establishing a continuity in exhibition calender of Maldivian art and visual arts sector of the country in general. It is hoped that the Maldives Contemporary will emerge as triennial event to wich artists-both establish and promising -can look forward to as an opportunity to showcase the best of their work.
The NAG also hopes to invite participants by international artists from the region and beyond in the future Maldives Contemporary exhibition. It is hoped that such participation will help to give an international dimension to the event and help to establish Maldivian art in a global context, from which local artists can benefit.
Maldives Contemporary will be on at the NAG until 12th March 2009.
